Datastream Access

Access Options

Full Access: Datastream for Office (DFO) Excel Add-In for LSEG Workspace

This is the direct replacement of the legacy desktop application.

  1. If you don't already have a LSEG Workspace account, create one.
  2. Ask Us for access to Datastream so we can add it to your LSEG Workspace account.
    • Research assistants and research fellows: please let us know who you're working for when you submit your request so we can best assist.
  3. Learn how to connect to the Excel Add-In.

Partial Access: Use WRDS

Not all Datastream data is available in WRDS. It includes data on global stocks, commodities, futures, and economic indicators. It does not include fixed income and ESG data.

See more information about Datastream in WRDS (you'll need a WRDS account to view).

License Terms

  • LSEG Workspace is only available to current Stanford faculty, staff, and students.
  • LSEG Workspace and Datastream can only be used for academic purposes. You may not use it for any kind of commercial purposes, including internships or consulting work.
  • You may download content for specific academic research projects. Once the project is completed, the content needs to be deleted.

Troubleshooting

Don't see the Datastream section of the Excel Plug-In?

If you see the Refinitiv tab in Excel but you don't see the Datastream button, you probably don't have Datastream added to your account. Ask Us and we'll take a look for you.

Running into issues downloading data using the Excel Plug-In?

There could be many reasons you're having issues. Here are some of the common ones:

  • Datastream accounts are limited to downloading 10,000,000 data points per month. If that is an issue, Ask Us and we can discuss your project and explore alternatives.
  • If you're trying to get data offered at different frequencies, you may see an ERROR message. For example, you ask for daily data for price and # of employees. The price data will return correctly, but you'll see an error for the # of employees as that data type is not available daily.

If you're still having issues, Ask Us and we'd be happy to assist.
