Capital IQ Access

If you have questions about using Capital IQ, Ask Us. See other options for analyst/equity reports, as our subscription doesn't include the add-on for reports from other firms.

How to Connect to Capital IQ

Always use a link on the GSB Library's website so you are recognized as a Stanford user.

  1. Connect to Capital IQ.
  2. Authenticate using your SUNet login.
  3. If prompted to enter your email address again, do so and check the box to "remember me" and press Next or Continue.
  4. First time users follow the prompts regarding terms of use.

Capital IQ is available to current Stanford faculty, staff, and students for academic use only.

Troubleshooting

If you see either of these errors, Ask Us for assistance and let us know what error you are getting. We can typically resolve the issue quickly to enable you to access Capital IQ.

  • "Unable to proceed at this time. Please check with your company administrator."
    • Try this workaround first:
      1. Open a new incognito/private browser.
      2. Click on the "connect to Capital IQ" link above.
      3. Log in with your Stanford credentials on the Stanford login page.
      4. You may be logged in at this stage, or if you get taken to another page that says "Essential Intelligence: S&P Capital IQ Platform Login", enter your SUNet email in the email field and click "next" which should complete the process.
  • "The user account is expired or inactive."

If you see the following error message please try again later: "System error. Please click the link below to log in again. If this message persists, contact Client Support and reference code (OAM-4)"

Note: If you are an incoming student, you will not be able to access Capital IQ until after you have registered for classes. Capital IQ, like most of our databases, is only licensed for current students, staff, and faculty.

Excel Add-in

Where to Use the Add-in

  • In the Trader’s Pit (onsite only).
  • [Currently Unavailable] On the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure in the GSB Library virtual desktop.
  • On your own computer (Windows only). To set up:
    1. You must already have a Capital IQ account - follow the steps above under "How to Connect to Capital IQ".
    2. Download the plugin:
      1. Log into Capital IQ.
      2. In the upper left, go to My Capital IQ > Downloads.
    3. Download the Office Add-in and follow the prompts in the setup wizard.
    4. In order to be able to log in to the plugin, you have to modify your computer’s Excel settings to allow you to log into Capital IQ with your SUNet:
      1. Download this file.
      2. Unzip or extract the file.
      3. Right click on the file and select Merge. If you don't see that option, double click on the file and allow the app to change your Registry Editor.
      4. Restart your computer. (Before you restart you will be prompted to log in with your SUNet each time you launch Excel, rather than just when you want to use the Capital IQ Add-in.)

How to Log in to the Add-in

  1. Open Excel and open a blank workbook. If prompted to sign in with your SUNet, do so.
  2. Go to the S&P Capital IQ tab in the ribbon.
  3. If you were already prompted to sign in with your SUNet, you are all set. If not, on the right of the ribbon, select Click to Enable.
  4. Log into the SUNet login box.

Troubleshooting the Excel Add-in

If you don't see the S&P Capital IQ tab:

  1. Go to File > Options.
  2. On the left select Add-Ins. Change the Manage drop-down menu to COM Add-ins, and press Go.
  3. Check the box next to S&P Capital IQ Excel Add-in and press OK. If the tab doesn't automatically appear, close and restart Excel.

If you don’t see the SUNet login box, verify you are accessing the plugin with one of the above options and have completed all the set up steps.

If you were able to log into the Excel Add-in with your SUNet but the buttons in the S&P Capital IQ tab do not work or if the function output is #CIQINACTIVE:

  1. Go to File > Options.
  2. On the left select General > User interface options > When using multiple displays select the Optimize for compatibility radio button.
  3. Close and restart Excel.

If the Excel Add-in was working but no longer does, you may need to re-download the file in the instructions above, as it may have been updated.
