How to Download from SDC Platinum

Step 1: Build the Search/Screen

  1. Select the database/section/module. This example uses Global New Issues Databases > All Equities.
  2. Enter a date range. Press OK.
  3. Select the items to search/screen by in the Search Items window.
    1. If you need to modify your search, you can right click on any of the parameters you have already added to modify or delete. Add additional parameters by selecting the Search icon in the menu bar.
  4. Press Execute in the top menu bar.

Step 2: Create the Report

  1. In the topmost menu bar, click on Report > New Custom (or, if reusing a saved report, Open Existing)
  2. Use the Express Report Items window to add variables (columns) to the report.
    1. It is good practice to grab more company or entity identifiers than you think you need, as your project may change and you may end up needing them! We recommend at least taking the company name, ticker, 6 and 9 digit CUSIP and ISIN.
  3. When finished, press OK in the upper right of the Design Custom Report Format window. Name the report (noting where it is saved) and press Save.
  4. In the Report Options window, increase the number in the Transactions per Group to a number larger than the number of variables you have selected. This allows you to download the report as one spreadsheet rather than having to customize the table layout.
    1. If you want to export the data as text rather than the default columnar grid (which automatically downloads into Excel), you can change that here too.
    2. Press OK.
  5. Press Execute in the top menu bar.
    1. Depending on the size of the request it can take a few minutes to complete. If it times-out, you will need to re-run the search but with fewer variables or dates.
  6. Once the report has run, in the top menu bar press Save.
    1. In the Save Output box name the file, choose a file type, and press Save.
      1. By default the file saves under This PC > Local Disc (C:) > SDC > 4.0.4.0 > Platinum > USR.
    2. It is good practice to save a copy of any custom reports you build in addition to the data you download. If you have the report it is much easier to update the dataset.

Helpful Notes

  • Be aware of exporting CUSIPs and being sure not to drop any leading 0's.
  • The variables you see when creating the custom report display differently in SDC than they do in the downloaded version.
    • For instance, in the M&A database > Joint Venture/Strategic Alliance section of SDC, there is a variable called Participant SIC Description (code PSICDESC), but in the downloaded version the variable is called Text Descriptions of All SIC Codes of Participant.
